The First Donnelly Centre Retreat
The first ever Donnelly Centre Retreat will take place in Deerhurst resort, in Huntsville, ON, on May 4-5, 2017. Below you'll find all relevant information about the retreat.
The buses to Deerhurst will depart at 7:15am on Thursday, May 4, from King’s College Road in front of the Sandford Fleming Building. The buses will not wait so make sure you’re there on time! It will take anything between 2.5-3.5 hours to get to Deerhurst, so if you’re driving there on your own, please reserve enough time to account for traffic.
On Friday, the buses will depart at 4:30pm from Deerhurst back to Toronto.
The primary focus of the retreat is on trainees, which is reflected in the program with all talks to be given by trainees, two poster sessions, and two panel discussions. In addition, there will be a freeform “unconference” session, which means that the content is decided by participants and is based on their interests. For that, we’d like you to think about a few things that interest you. For example: What would you like to learn at the retreat? What topics would be the most useful for your career goals/current project/general interest? What is the most interesting thing in science right now? How could your skills help other trainees in the Donnelly Centre?
We’re incredibly excited to have Stuart Firestein as the keynote speaker! He’s the Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University, and an author of two excellent popular science books, Ignorance and Failure. His talk, “Ignorance, Doubt, Uncertainty and Failure: Why Science is So Successful” will close the retreat on Friday afternoon.
There’s no retreat without a party! The party will take place on Thursday evening and it features… well, you’ll see.
